Abstract

The paper narrates the intellectual history of neo-Marxism in educational theory and in the sociology of education. Neo-Marxism is pictured here as a foundation of the so-called ?radical educational theory?, serving as a groundwork generating the discourse of critical pedagogy as envisaged by H. A. Giroux. The main argument advanced in the article is that the ?radical? theorization of the functions and possibilities of transforming the educational system, along with pedagogy?s mission, cannot simply be attributed to the disciples of P. Freire such as H. Giroux, P. McLaren, I. Shor, J. Kincheloe, D. Macedo and others ? as it is commonly held ? since these thinkers came of age reading and learning from a much earlier generation of social and educational critics who utilized Marx?s notion of reproduction to challenge the traditional, optimistic assumption that school functioned as a ?great equalizer? ? an institution that promotes the development of a democratic and egalitarian society. Following the applications of Marx?s ideas and their neo-Marxist developments within the 1970s?1980s in the educational theory and in the sociology of education, the paper ? in its first part ? attempts to illuminate the problem of a gradual radicalization of educational theory well before the interventions of Giroux whose philosophy of education and the pedagogical vision accompanying it have both been based on neo-Marxism, and flourished from a critical dispute therewith.
